Super pit to always be iconic attraction

The former Tyneside school for disabled children was once the second most popular destination for visitors and attracted millions of visitors per year.

In 2005, a £20 million deal was reached to re-open the property and the attraction will remain open.

The redevelopment is taking place as part of a wider £130 million regeneration and re-opening programme that is also being funded by the Government and by the private sector.

This includes the £1 billion Millennium Dome – the biggest arena in the world – and the £300 million building of a £6 billion Olympic sports complex in Luton.

In addition, more than 1,000 new homes and schools are being built to replace the over 100,000 that were demolished.

'Best tribute to the past'

The old school, which had been run as a secondary school between 1950 and 1973, served around 6,000 pupils on the day school opened.

More than 40,000 children attended the school until 2011, with its former students visiting the school every week.

The project will provide over 200 jobs and support for a number of local community businesses and local residents.

The new towers will provide additional space for schools, homes and other activities during the time the park is open to the public.

The development will also mean a new road route will run through the site, connecting the existing road to the park by tram.

It comes as the park nears its 500th day of running.

The new school will take a further six months to open but visitors will be able to continue to enjoy a new attraction, which will include a new tower and terraces.

Portsmouth council leader Richard Eversley said the development had been in the planning permission for "some time and we believe we are on our way to finishing it soon".
